Postdoctoral position in plasmonic gas sensing

We are looking for a highly motivated post doc who will work in the area of nanoplasmonic-metal oxide hybrid material based gas sensing with particular focus on urban air quality and thus gas species like NO, NO2, CO and SO2. The post doc project, which is hosted at Chalmers in the Langhammer group, is a collaboration with Insplorion AB, who is coordinating the project. The overall goal of the project is to develop a miniaturized portable air quality monitoring device, based on nanoplasmonic sensor technology and multiplexing.
The aim of your research project will be to develop and test different nanostructured metal oxide sensing materials and their integration with a nanoplasmonic sensor platform by means of advanced nanofabrication and materials processing. Moreover, you will develop multiplexed sensors comprised of tailored nanostructures and sensing materials to allow the selective and unambiguous detection of hazardous gas molecules such as NOx, CO, and SO2. Together with the experts at Insplorion AB, you will also participate in the integration of the developed sensing platform in a portable device and product prototype.
Information about the research group
The Langhammer group at the Chemical Physics Division at the Department of Physics operates at the interface between materials science, nanoscience, catalysis, nanoplasmonics and in situ spectroscopy, with a particular focus on sustainable energy-related materials, nanosensors and nanoparticles. For that purpose we continuously develop and evolve our own methodologies for state-of-the-art nanofabrication, as well as build our own customized research instrumentation. Now we intensify our efforts towards the development and assessment of new plasmonic materials for optical gas sensing and their integration in sensor devices.

Your working time is fully devoted to the research related to the project and governed by project deliverables agreed upon by the project funder, Mistra Innovation. You are expected to work independently at your project both at Chalmers and at Insplorion AB, depending on the tasks and the phase of the project.
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
To qualify as a candidate for the position you must have a Ph.D. in Nanoscience, Materials Science, Physics or Chemistry, ideally with emphasis on the chemistry and physics of metal oxides, not older than 3 years.
A background with significant hands on experience with nanofabrication and nanomaterials and/or previous experience in the application of metal oxides in general and/or in sensors is a merit.
Nanofabriaction of noble metal nanoparticles and understanding of their plasmonic properties with particular focus on sensing is a merit.
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, which involves collaborations within the project team involving a research group and a company, but also internationally, the candidate is expected to have excellent collaboration skills.
The position also requires excellent communication skills in written and spoken English. Applicants who do not have English or a Scandinavian language as their mother tongue need to provide documentation of good communication skills in English, typically evidenced by an English language test, for example TOEFL 550 (paper-based)/TOEFL 213 (computer-based), and exemplified during the interview process prior to admission.
